My sweet horse LOVES carrots. For a special Valentine’s treat I wanted to make him some homemade goodies. I found a few recipes online when I searched for horse treats and I picked a couple to try. One recipe was kind of a disaster and one came out pretty good. I’ll share both below and maybe you can tweak my fail to make it work for you!
My Not-So-Great Recipe:
What you need:
- 1 apple
- 1 carrot
- 2 1/2 cups of oats
- 1 cup molasses
- 2 tbsp oil
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F
Shred the carrot and apple then mix everything together. Put spoonfuls onto a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes or until hard. Let cool in fridge.
SO…. they didn’t turn out great. It was too much molasses. They smelled AMAZING though. Maybe you can fix this recipe and make it work for you!
My Good Recipe was by Sarah from Sarah Hearts:
Here’s what you need:
- 2 cups of shredded carrots (about 4 carrots)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup oats
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup of your horse’s grain (optional)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Mix everything together. You will have a sticky dough. You can use your hands (very messy!) or a spoon or a cookie dough scoop to make small dough balls around 1 inch. Place them on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 25 minutes.
These treats came out much better! I put these in a container that I’m going to take to the barn.
Let me know if any of these worked for you or if you have a favorite one I should know about.
SO. What did the horses think of the treats? Check out the video!
