Advice To New Puppy Owners

My y favorite tips for new puppies

Over the last 18 months, thanks to COVID, so many people and families have welcomed a new dog or puppy into their home. 🙂 I think this is WONDERFUL!! We got our puppy about 6 months before COVID hit so we were still in the puppy phase during shut down.

As a vet, I’ve got some advice for new puppy owners so your dog can make a smooth transition into your home!

These are our dog’s adoption pictures. Isn’t she adorable?!

We had to say goodbye to our beloved dog of 14 years earlier that year. Watching our loving dog’s health decline was incredibly difficult and emotional. It was just a heart wrenching time.

When we were ready to welcome a new dog into our home we knew we wanted a puppy. What could be more fun for kids than a new puppy?! I was hungry for the joy that a new puppy brings. It had been 14 years since I’d last been around a puppy and I knew I needed some help getting ready.

I’m in a group on Facebook for veterinarians and I asked what book I should read to get ready for a new puppy at home. The majority of people suggested the book, Perfect Puppy In 7 Days. This book was written by a veterinarian who worked in behavior. The book is easy to read and has lots of pictures! It helped me get a game plan for when we brought our new puppy home.

I felt confident setting up her schedule and thanks to that, potty training went so well!! I think she only had a couple accidents in the house and I just missed her cues. She didn’t get into the kids toys because she was always on a leash attached to me. I highly recommend this book- I think it could even help adult dogs!

Here she is all grown up! She still has lots of energy and sometimes can be “too much,” but we love having her in our family. The picture above was taken at the Lexington Cemetery and she was wearing a leash in the picture! 🙂

I’ll attach links to some of my favorite products from the book that we used with our puppy and loved!

I hope the book helps you and gives you some ideas on puppy and dog care.
